This photo was taken in 2004 in front of John Gaehwiler’s Blacksmith Shop at 3065 23rd St. in San Francisco.   In 1900 there was no blacksmith shop at this site and John Gaehwiler was living and working  as a blacksmith, across the bay,  in Ward 7, Oakland City, Alameda County, California. John Gaehwiler was born in Switzerland about 1860-1861 and emigrated to this country in 1891. He married his wife, Elise [aka Eliza] Gaehwiler about 1883.  She apparently came to this country the next year, 1892 with her children.  Elise Gaehwiler was the mother of 6 children, 2 of whom,  John, Jr. and a daughter, Lizzie,  were still living in 1900.   According to an index of San Francisco Probate Records, John Gaehwiler, Sr. died in 1919; his wife passed away in 1923.  Their son, John Gaehwiler, Jr, took over the family blacksmith business and continued to operate it at the 3065 23rd St. location.
