Head set illustration from 1904 flyer on left, with remanufactured fittings on right. The illustration shows a single lever for a two-speed model. Our surviving model is a three-speed. The forward lever switches between two lower hill-climbing speed gears via a clutch on the gears at the end of the shaft drive (see gears). Put this lever in a neutral position, and the aft lever is used to engage the level-road gear.

New head fittings were needed. Modern versions from the recycled bike parts store (with wrench lugs) were turned to mimic the original lost fittings. The new pieces were a bit taller than original, but remarkably, after 100 years the threading guage for the head tube was an identical match for the original. The original head tube was rusted beyond use, so a new a tube was fitted.
